2017 GMC Sierra Road Test
The 2017 GMC Sierra HD Denali, the carmaker’s ultra-premium pickup, is a bonafide heavyweight that makes sure not to skim on the extra touches. A 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 that pumps out 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque, critics are praising this GMC Sierra’s beefy potential as a heavy-duty working truck.
Built to get the job done
James Riswick for Auto Blog sings particular praises for the pickup’s reengineered engine that produces more power and torque while still coming out more efficient and eco-friendly than its ancestors. In fact, this new tubordiesel engine makes the GMC Sierra best-in-class when it comes to horsepower, and it falls just 16 torques short of earning another title.
“We wanted to first meet emissions and then deliver the maximum horsepower and torque we could and deliver it over the widest usability range possible,” explains Eric Stanczak, the Sierra’s chief engineer.
For his test drive, Riswick got behind the wheel of a 2017 Sierra 2500 HD Denali. Even though this model is one of the most upgraded, nearly 45% of Sierra buyers walk out of a GMC dealership with a same, or very similar, package. Loaded up with snowmobiles, the reviewer and his crew trekked out to Paradox Valley in Colorado to test its road capability.
“The Sierra pulled and pulled and pulled up the grade, free from any abrupt downshifts from the mostly carry-over, but strengthened six-speed automatic transmission. Torque will do that for you, friends,” he writes. “And should it have been August in Paradox Valley with the thermometer pushing triple digits, the Duramax’s new, patent-pending cold-air intake system would’ve made sure it kept pulling with similar authority.”
The Denali’s extensive camera setup proved incredibly useful for successfully navigating the canyon’s twists and turns with no anxiety, and the rearview cameras are particularly handy for hooking up trailers or checking on loaded cargo like Riswick’s big snowmobiles.
