Buick Encore Nabs Top Safety Pick for IIHS
As much as we all love the look and power of the Buick Encore, at Arnie Bauer we also appreciate the safety features that come standard in this subcompact crossover. Apparently, we aren’t the only ones who recognize Buick’s commitment to building safe vehicles. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety granted our favorite little SUV a Top Safety Pick for 2015.
This isn’t surprising to us as we know that Buick has been working hard to make improvements to the overall safety of the Encore, but getting industry recognition from the IIHS is certainly something to be proud of. The 2015 Encore fared well in small and moderate overlap crash tests, receiving the top score. Side impact crash tests also saw the Encore earning the same score. This is an improvement of the previous model which did not score as well in the small-overlap test, which was something Buick engineers took to heart and were committed to correcting.
This test has been a challenge for many automakers. The small-overlap crash is intended to simulate a front corner collision with a utility pole or another vehicle. Overcoming this challenge is what enabled the 2015 Encore to achieve a top safety rating.
The Encore also earned scores of “good” in the small SUV category for head restraints and seats, as well as roof strength. Front and rear head curtain airbags combined with front and rear seat-mounted torso bags helped earned high ratings, as did the rollover sensor which deploys the side airbags during a rollover. An electronic stability control feature and antilock brakes also provide further protection against road accidents.
As important as safety ratings are and as well as Buick has done, this is certainly no reason to rest on the laurels of the IIHS recognition. There are always advances to be made in all areas of production and improvement to existing safety features is certainly no exception. The highest recognition the IIHS gives is the Top Safety Pick Plus, and while Buick did not receive that designation because its forward collision warning system does not come standard, you can bet Buick engineers have already starting planning ways on improving the overall safety of their vehicles, not to mention the performance and luxury features as well.
