Buick’s Active-Hood Plans
As autumn nears and plans form for road trips all over the U.S. in the nearing holiday season, Buick is debuting a new feature on the 2018 Regal Sportback and first-ever 2018 Regal TourX designed to keep pedestrians a little safer as more cars are on the road.
Already available on these new Buick models, the Active-Hood system is designed to reduce the potential for injury in the event a pedestrian is hit.
The system is able to detect individuals walking in front of the vehicle with a set of pressure sensors located behind the grille. If the car makes contact with a pedestrian while traveling between 16 and 30 mph, these pressure sensors will trigger a set of actuators to lift the back of the hood up about four inches, deploying the Active-Hood system.
This lift is meant to reduce injury by making the angle slightly less dramatic.
This feature is one addition to the line-up of safety features that made it possible for the 2017 Buick Regal to receive a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In addition to the Active-Hood, the 2018 model also features Lane Keep Assist, which signals drivers when they are about to leave a lane unintentionally, and Front Pedestrian Braking, which alerts the driver when a pedestrian is directly ahead and the driver has not yet applied their brakes.
New safety features such as these are becoming more common among automakers. The Active-Hood and other similar technology, including Mercedes-Benz’s active bonnet system and Lexus’ four-point pop-up hood system, has also been introduced in Tesla and Hyundai vehicles.
These new pedestrian safety measures come, perhaps, as a way to combat the 15 pedestrian fatalities that occur each day, estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It’s a first step to reduce a large number of pedestrian injuries (70,000 injuries in 2015) and fatalities (5,376 in 2015) in new Buick models for sale and hopefully one that will make its way into all the major automakers’ plans soon.
